In executing all jobs, Segulat Nigeria Limited main objective is to operate in the safest and economic manner by ensuring that the safety of our employees, and the public, is of the highest priority. Accident prevention shall be considered of primary importance in all phases of operations and administration. We maintain effective standards that will guard against injuries and illnesses occurring on the job.
It is the safety policy of Segulat Nigeria limited to maintain open communication between management and staff on matters pertaining to safety. All employees are encouraged to express their concerns or suggestions to help promote safe work practices and conditions. We take it as a responsibility to provide current safety news, safety activities and reading materials, signs, and posters, which will be easily accessible to all employees
The company is committed to continual improvement of the health and safety management system, which complies with health and safety bodies and to meeting current health and safety legislation and any subsequent changes

To meet our commitment to safety, management will:
•Promote a positive attitude towards accident prevention
•Establish and insist upon safe work practices and conditions
•Provide appropriate supervision, training, and monitor conformance to quality standards
•Ensure employees and other persons understand and accept their responsibility to promote a safe and healthy work place
•Ensure that subcontractors working on our premises have, and follow, appropriate safety procedures

In line with these responsibilities, the company aims to provide, as far as is reasonably practicable:
•a safe and healthy working environment for all its employees, the carrying out of risk analyses and the identification of hazards;
•systems of work which are safe and without risks to health;
•general training in health and safety so that all employees are made aware of any potential hazards in relation to their work, and the latest procedures for overcoming them;
•specific training in safe working procedures, the operation of plant and machinery and accident prevention;
•a system for conducting a regular review of the training needs of the workforce;
•the provision of regular refresher courses, with reference to training already carried out;
•basic training in health and safety to new employees and young workers, and to ensure that whenever new plant or variations in systems of work are introduced, then the appropriate safety training is given;
•personal protective clothing and equipment appropriate to the job in hand;
•guidance on what to do in the event of an emergency;
•on-site welfare and first-aid provision which complies fully with the statutory requirements together with a system for maintaining the equipment;
•adequate fire fighting equipment and fire training, in liaison with the fire authority;
•a means of contact with the relevant health and safety bodies so that up-to-date information on legislation, codes of practice and other technical guidance is available within the company, and is circulated promptly to all concerned

2.2.0 ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
Every employee of Segulat Nigeria Limited is expected to live in a healthy and environmental acceptable atmosphere both at home and at work and must operate within the statutory requirement of Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA). The company ensures a clean and healthy environment especially in the course of wok. We are committed to:
•A greener and cleaner environment for all
•Prevention of pollution in all areas of our operation
•A programme of continual improvement in everything we do
•Keeping ourselves aware of and compliant with, all current and future legislation
•Reduced use of natural resources
•Minimize waste and maximize recycling/reuse
Environmental targets and objectives are set for our businesses that are checked by regular management and supervisory actions. We believe and promote that all our directly employed personnel together with any specialist sub-contractors and suppliers are responsible for the adherence to environmental targets, objectives and management programmes. Our people will receive the appropriate levels of training and awareness to ensure that due emphasis is placed on the protection of the Environment and site care/cleanliness.
Recycling and re-use of materials will be carried out where possible and where not, due care will be exercised in respect of waste disposal in accordance with current guidelines and legislation.

2.3.0 FUNCTIONAL RESPOSIBILITY FOR SAFETY

Management role:
The responsibilities of ensuring implementation of the policy for health, safety and environment rest directly upon the management. The management ensures that all employees are informed of top management’s commitment to safety and the acceptance of all federal, state, and local regulations. Establish company safety rules and programs, and provides supervision with the backing, training and funds to implement these rules and programs

The safety officer is advised to ensure that all work activities are conducted in safe manner. In addition to the above, the management will carry out the following measures to ensure effective implementation of the company’s safety policy:
•Consult with cooperate environmental programmes and cooperate medical as appropriate on the adequate of their health, safety and environmental programmes
•Implementation monitoring and auditing systems at the plant and business level designed to detect violations and assure compliance with the law and this policy
•Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of managers and other senior employees on their implementation of this policy and environmental, health and safety programmes
•Ensure that adequate instructions are given to the employees on all aspect of their work
•Reviews operations and work method from time to time in order to incorporate where necessary changes in statutory obligation and new technologies


Roles and responsibilities of safety officer
The safety officer wills advice management and supervisors on safety matters as necessitated by the job to be executed. He is Responsible for implementation and monitoring the safety program. He will carry out the following duties
•Give’ pep talk’ early morning briefing to workers before the day begins
•Ensure that workers wear necessary personnel protective equipment
•Ensure that appropriate work permit are obtained from the client and all the precautions stipulated strictly observed
•Reviews and maintains current copy of all applicable Federal, State, and local safety and health regulations.
•Implements and monitors safety training programs and provides safety materials as needed
•Conduct unsafe act audition on site daily
•Assures proper notification in the event of an accident
•Assists site supervision in accident investigation and recommends controls to prevent a reoccurrence

Supervisors / Foremen
The supervisors / foremen are responsible for the safety of their employees and oversee the compliance with the safety program and applicable state, federal, and local regulations.
They arrange for prompt medical attention in case of an injury and provide a thorough written investigative report with recommendations to prevent a reoccurrence.

Employees
The employees are responsible for learning and abiding by the rules and regulations which are applicable to their assigned tasks. They are to reports all accidents and near-misses. And perform their functions in the safest possible manner and encourage co-workers to do likewise

2.4.0 EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROCEDURES
On the event of explosion, fire, spill of hazardous materials or gases, employee working in the affected area shall observe the following rules:
•Alert all workers of the hazard
•Inform the clients department in charge by phone or any possible means, so that alarm can be raised
•Shut down all equipment in operation and leave the area at once
•Report to the designated muster point calmly
•Employees shall assist the client’s or safety officer in roll call

EMERGENCY CONTRACTS
For emergency purpose, the following department will be contacted:
•Fire station
•Fire clinics
•Fire service station
•Oil spill crew
•Emergency clinics
In reporting injury of fire, call either on phone or radio giving details of the emergency and exact location. Remember to direct ambulance or fire crew to the required location
In case of emergency, the loss prevention department will be contacted. In case of the accidents or injury, the medical centre will be contacted. Radio communication is establish with fist aider supervisor staff

2.5.0 SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES

The safety rules and procedures are developed to assist in achieving job safety by having known employee accidents. For these reasons, every employee is expected to abide by the safety rules and procedures at all times.
General Safety Rule
•A copy of the company rules and regulations shall be provided for every employees for their personal reference and understanding
•Keep your mind on your work at all times. No horseplay on the job. Injury or termination, or both, can be the result.
•Sleeping on the work site is forbidden under all circumstances

•Personal safety equipment must be worn as prescribed for each job, such as; safety glasses for eye protection, hard hats shall be worn on all jobs where hazards exist from falling or flying objects, harmful contacts, exposure to electrical shock; and when handling materials, and safety shoes are highly recommended for protection against foot injuries.
•Keep your shirt on to prevent sunburn and to protect against acid burns, steam burns, weld splatter, and cuts. Minimum clothing for the upper body is a T-shirt.
• If any part of your body should come in contact with an acid or caustic substance, rush to the nearest water available and flush over the affected part. Secure medical aid immediately.
• Watch where you are walking. Don't run.
• The use of illegal drugs or alcohol or being under the influence of same on the project shall be cause for termination. If strong prescription drugs are given to you that warn against driving or using machinery, let your supervisor know about them.
• Do not distract the attention of fellow workers. To do so may cause injury.
•Sanitation facilities have been or will be provided for your use. Defacing or damaging these facilities is forbidden.
• A good job is a clean job and a clean job is a safe one. So keep your working area free from rubbish and debris.
• Do not use a compressor to blow dust or dirt from your clothes, hair, face or hands.
• Never work aloft if you are afraid to do so, are subject to dizzy spells, or if you are apt to be nervous or sick.
• Never move an injured person unless it is absolutely necessary. Further injury may result. Keep the injured as comfortable as possible and utilize job site first-aid facilities until a doctor arrives.
•Know where firefighting equipment is located and learn how to use it.
• Learn to lift correctly - with the legs, not the back. If the load is too heavy, GET HELP. 20% of all construction-related injuries result from lifting materials.
•Riding on loads, fenders, running boards, sideboards, and gates or with your legs dangling over the ends or sides of trucks will not be tolerated.
• Do not use power tools and equipment until you have been properly instructed in safe work methods and become authorized to use them
• Be sure that all guards are in place. Do not remove, displace, damage, or destroy any safety device or safeguard furnished or provided for use on the job, nor interfere with the use thereof.
• Do not enter an area which has been roped off or barricaded.
• If you must work around power shovels, cranes, trucks, and dozers make sure operators can always see you.
• Never oil, lubricate, or fuel equipment while it is running or in motion
• Rope off or barricade danger areas.
• Keep away from the edge of cuts, embankments, trenches, holes and/or pits.

• Trenches over 5 ft. in depth must be shored or sloped as required. Keep out of trenches or cuts that have not been properly sloped or shored. Excavated or other material shall not be stores nearer than 3 feet from the edge of any excavation.
• Use the "four and one" rule when using a ladder. One foot of base for every four feet of height.
• Always secure the bottom of the ladder with cleats and/or safety feet. Lash off the top of the ladder to avoid shifting.
• Ladders must extend three feet above a landing for proper use.
• Defective ladders must be properly tagged and removed from service.
• Keep ladder bases free of debris, hoses, wires, materials, etc.
• Build scaffolds according to manufacturers' recommendations.
• Scaffold planks must be cleated or secured to prevent them from sliding.
• Use only extension cords of the three-prong type. Check the electrical grounding system daily.
•The use of safety belts with safety lines when working from unprotected high places is mandatory. Always keep your line as tight as possible.
• Never throw anything "overboard". Someone passing below may be seriously injured.
• Open fires are prohibited.
• Know what emergency procedures have been established for your job site. (Location of Emergency Phone, First Aid Kit, Stretcher Location, Fire Extinguisher Locations. Evacuation Plan, etc.)

2.6.0 ACCIDENT REPORTING AND DISCUSSIONS

An employee must report any accident or injury, regardless of how minor, to the Job Superintendent.
All inquiries concerning incident/accident/injury/property damage shall be referred to the Superintendent. The employee will make no comments, provide no details, or express any opinion as to the cause of the incident, who was at fault, responsibility for, or any intent of the company regarding the incident
The Superintendent will investigate any personal injury accident, property damage claim or vehicle accident associated with the job and will complete an Accident Investigation Report. The purpose of this investigation is to assist in preventing this type of mishap in the future. The employee will cooperate fully with the Superintendent in this investigation. The superintendent will correct the unsafe act and / or conditions that were responsible for the accident. Where such cause cannot be immediately rectified, he should make recommendations to management on what measures to be implemented in order to forestall similar mishap in the future

2.7.0 MEDICAL TREATMENTS

A first aid box shall be provided and only the person that has undergone first aid training would be allowed to administer treatment. No person without first aid training shall handle the injury person

We shall ensure that all injured personnel receive adequate first aid treatment and shall thereafter be made to receive medical attention at her retainer clinic or any available standard clinic

All drugs dispense from the first aid box will be recorded to ensure that there is continuity between first aid and the retained doctors. The first aid register shall be regularly reviewed by the doctor for the following reason
•To provide advice on the effects of a particular job
•Periodic or special examinations to protect workers against hazardous substance
•To undertake epidemic studies of exposed groups of workers to determine long term effects of the substances used on them

Prior to employment and applicant must undergo a full medical text and a certificate of fitness issued by a physician

Self medication is discourage, all illnesses arising from work will be reported and appropriate medical treatment should be given

In the event of serious accident, an ambulance will be provide and all efforts will be made to keep on-lookers out of the scene
